Probably because with all of XP's eyecandy, as well as
the NT-based kernel, anything less would be sluggish.

I'm guessing my whole box at home is suffering from
just that-- flaky RAM. :( I've pretty much narrowed it
down to that. Both my Win98SE and Linux partitions die
at some point within an hour or two (especially when
I'm recompiling the kernel, or really stressing out
the CPU). Probably related to heat and a broken fan.

Oh, and if you're planning to get a refurbished unit,
check out the power supply and fan. And check if the
motherboard has an onboard video card-- if it has,
check that you have a separate card, and that the
onboard chip has been disabled in CMOS. Those things
eat up memory. :)
