I was experiencing the same problem before. I'm also using Slackware 8.1. I 
have a few dialup accounts and my /etc/resolv.conf is used to being messed 
up. What I did was setup a local DNS server (resolver) so I don't have to 
depend on my ISP's nameservers.

pppsetup may have added an entry on your resolv.conf file, try removing it.
