now i got it. the /etc/ppp/options file which used to allow dynamic DNS
entries was overwritten by the one created by pppsetup. thats why kppp
wouldnt allow automatic DNS detection when i ran pppsetup. that was the
main problem.

for archival purposes, i would like to suggest a solution to my own
problem, and i hope it could be useful to others.

what i did was to change the /etc/ppp/options file to the one provided
by the distribution [/etc/ppp/options.dist]. i browsed through the file,
and it was a fully documented (almost a tutorial) about the options that
you may want to enable or disable. it pretty much saved me from freaking
out and reading a whole lot of howtos and documentation, althogh it
could have been fun and entertaining, given that i have the whole
christmas break to myself. ;)

and btw, i dont like the thought or running services that my ISP
provides for me. i might think of doing that [setting up a nameserver]
when i already see the need - like when i'm always online and want an
efficient means of name resolution within my network (which i dont have
now) as well as to the outside world.

and that task would be another learning experience which i would want to
undertake, as well as master. but then i have no need yet for running my
own nameserver so i wont. ;)

i tried this one to no avail, but the above step i took worked like a
charm. i hope it would work for others too.
