i agree.  the original question though, and the reason partitionmagic
and formatting from XP were mentioned is, the device is an external
drive usb or some sort of PCMCIA or firewire device, probably.
i think Prof Feria said it was USB.  it seems he didn't have a linux
bootable CD that had support for the device.  and he probably couldnt 
install Linux on the box so he wanted to format it to ext* from
XP.
