hello all,

i've got a windows 2000 box that i want to dual boot (mainly as
a learning platform for staff i'm training).

originally, the box had FreeBSD and W2K on it. we installed
Mandrake 9 (wiping out FreeBSD). LILO did not overwrite the
MBR and instead we still had the FreeBSD boot loader.

1. we booted into the CD, went to rescue, and did the
Restore boot loader thing. that didn't work.

2. we went into the console, mounted /dev/hda5 under /mnt
(/dev/hda5 is where linux is, /dev/hda1 is w2k) and chrooted
to /mnt. then we did lilo manually. it says it's installing itself,
but when we reboot, the box still goes straight into windows.
there's no hint that lilo exists at all. i realize that this is
functionally equivalent to #1 :), but i decided to do it manually
    anyway, just to make sure.

3. i reinstalled linux in expert mode (the previous install was done
by someone else, choosing defaults). still no joy.

has anyone seen this (lilo saying it works, but it doesn't actually
write itself to the MBR)?

i'm having someone backup the data now before i try things that
might destroy data (but short of wiping out W2K, no choice there,
we have to keep it around for a bit longer).
