But you did set the option to install it on the MBR, right?

Hmmmm, i can't recall if i've encountered this thing...but here goes.
I'm just curious. you say win2k is in /dev/hda1 and linux is in
/dev/hda5 (which is on the extended partition), what's occupying your
remaining 2 primary partitions? (Makes me wonder why you can't overwrite
the MBR with lilo...as i've tried dual-booting XP+Linux-Lilo with
ease...is there something special about the 2k boot loader???).

Try this, if you have an available primary partition try using it as
your / root partition. or if you insist on installing linux on
/dev/hda5, at least create the /boot partition on any available primary
partition and make it active, and make sure you set the option to
install lilo on the MBR.
