A previous thread got my attention because it reminded me of a problem I
encountered in the past and kluged around. If you have two otherwise
identical NIC's in the same machine, e.g. two D-Link/8139too NIC's, how
do you know which NIC gets eth0 and which one will get eth1, or is it
possible to somehow assign an interface to a particular NIC? I know
this can be done if the cards are different, but what if they're
otherwise identical? Is my only hope to switch cables or network
configurations if I can't ping hosts on the networks?

I've encountered this problem on boxes with an onboard 8139too and a
separate 8139too on a card. Apparently the card gets assigned eth0 and
the motherboard NIC gets assigned eth1... How does this generalize?
