I've encountered this problem on boxes with an onboard 8139too and a separate 8139too on a card. Apparently the card gets assigned eth0 and the motherboard NIC gets assigned eth1... How does this generalize?
one of my test machines here have 2 built-in NICs (8139too) and guess what?, they are already marked as NIC1 and NIC2 which the OS automatically assigns them as eth0 and eth1 respectively.
* you can't interchange them thru "alias" coz imagine having this on your modules.conf
alias eth0 8139too alias eth1 8139too
and same thing with our SR300 having 8 built-in NICs.
play with "lspci", and you'll notice that lower pci# gets the first assign, so on....
*but what if one of the NIC is ISA?
