So what you want is some option to the ls command that not only shows the filename, but also the filetype and a brief description of the file contents (blank by default, but can be filled in by the user anytime he wants). Now neither "struct dirent" nor "struct stat" seems to have space for a brief description, so there is no "natural" place to place such description.
