Eric,

What I do is [] rename file management.
I get the inspiration from downloading
80's songs from Napster and Kazaa. :)

originalfile[<download site>_<date>_<version or description>].tar.gz

Advantage:
1. Works with *nix or windows.
2. you keep the original filename.
3. shows you the download site, date (I usually
   ommit it.) and version of the software.

Disadvantage:
Don't know yet...

Example:
MT2.6-current-2003-03-02-12-08[www.acme.org_102002_ver2.6_firewall_software].tar.gz
