1. Isn't this more or less the way it is already done in the present implementation of msdos/vfat filesystems? If an existing msdos/windows directory (not NTFS) is mounted as fstype msdos, then the filenames are munged to 8.3. If the same msdos/windows directory is mounted as fstype vfat, the the long filenames are used. So the long names are already stored somewhere in vfat filesystem. 2. If umsdos is riding on top of the msdos filesystem, to enable the msdos filesystem to look like a Unix filesystem with long filenames, then umsdos has in each directory a file similar to descript.ion.
