Yes, Try nntpcache (http://www.nntpcache.org). It pretends to be a news server and it caches news groups. It functions roughly like squid, but only for nntp protocol. We used to get our nntp feed from mozcom, on a 128kbps link. It saves huge amount of bandwidth, filters spam and certain news groups. Amazing Software. But! the license says you have to pay for it. the cost is minimal, compared to adding large HDD, memory, cpu and bandwidth to support a full blown nntp server.
