in the early(?) days of XFree86 (3 or 4 years ago) when your video card
wasnt supported by X (only ran with the SVGA driver with low res) you
could use fb to get a usable resolution for your desktop.

if you by chance have a video card that still isnt supported by XFree86
then you could still use it with fb :)
