As I stated before, I would prefer that we use something standard
instead of a homebrewed custom distribution made just for the event.

However I personally do not trust RedHat.

Why not RedHat? Because its track record sucks, IMHO. Debian's, on the
other hand, has been pretty superb without even having to be a "secure
distribution". It's a standard general-purpose GNU/Linux distribution
with particular emphasis on applications that benefit from a slower
release cycle following the tried-and-tested approach.

As a volunteer to the PenguiGnus-2003 team, I will abide by whatever
restrictions will be set both by the event coordinators and the majority
of the team. However I have advocated and will continue to advocate
something I use and recommend others use in the real world. I believe
that beyond just keeping SittingPenguin secure during ManilaCon 2003,
this is an opportunity to see if we can recommend what we use.

There are many other reasons why I prefer Debian to RedHat. The fact
that it is completely volunteer-driven in contrast to RedHat being
driven by a for-profit corporation is one important bit, FWIW.

Besides, why not Debian? It's also GNU/Linux. It's standard. It's
publicly available. What's more, Debian comes with stricter guidelines
when it comes to free software, for which reason applications like Pine
are not included by default in the Debian tree. These may not be
important from the security point of view, but as what will be our flag
in ManilaCon 2003, I believe Debian is a very symbolic and viable
choice.
