Probably we could do that but that maybe perceived by the public as negative "why not red hat?"

my thoughts exactly.

i've talked to a lot of IT-oriented pipol (but non-linux users) and everytime
i've mentioned the word "linux" they would readily reply "aaah, Redhat"
well, you cant blame them.

here's the real scenario (in the phils): you can't sell linux-based
solutions that doesn't have a name yet. especially to non-linux users.
coz they will only trust Redhat and derivatives (for now).
why? due to support (redhat call center at sykes), partnership
with ibm , books, certifications, business model, etc....
(maybe due to its color similar to jollibee or mcdo, heheheh)

plus, they will only use or try to use linux applications
that are popular such as Apache, PHP, MySQL, Postfix, etc.
due to their popularity and other obvious reasons....

their mentality: "if it is secured but not popular, then how would i know?"

one can win the battle in securing the boxes with gnu/linux
using powerful (but not popular) tools but they cant simply
win the eyes of the potential clients.

i think we should view the contest as a door that will lead to business
and not just about our LQ (Linux Quotient)

*who knows, businesses might dump RH in favor of debian
after using the former in 2-3 years.

using redhat shouldnt be a problem. if you're not satisfy with
it then rebuild it. you can customize it according to your needs.
(you can make it perform like Debian or user friendly like Mandrake).
* i'm not a redhat user. we use debian at work and i use mandrake
for my multimedia pc at home.

so, let's take redhat as a challenge and not a hindrance.

that's why i've offered my services to ian yesterday only if needed
coz i've assumed that the target distro would be redhat (debian) and the
applications to be secured are the typical ones like: Apache,PHP,
etc. as long as i have the liberty to rebuild the applications/libraries
from sources then build my own package. but i guess i wont be needed anyway,
hehehehe.

more power to all of us at PLUG!!!!
