huh. actually i was wondering about rsync. generally, for updates,
i would think that rsync wouldn't help that much. the compressed
transfer would help, but that would probably be about it (unless
we're doing something like downloading an ISO and the new
ISO has the new updated packages).

the reason rsync wouldn't matter so much here (IMO) is that
new packages have new names. rsync won't know that
kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk.rpm is supposed to be mostly
the same as kernel-2.4.24.0.19mdk-1-1mdk.rpm (made up
that version number, likely there's no such kernel). so
basically, with updates, you're going to be downloading whole
files. wget already has -c (continue) support. so the incremental
"changes only" feature that rsync gives you won't matter much.

but if i'm mistaken there, i'd like to know so i'll work harder looking
for an rsync mirror :).

thanks. i did a little googling and after some experiment, i find that:

rsync -rLav ftp.uninett.no::Mandrake/Mandrake .

downloads something :). it's downloading very slowly though (bandwidth
management on my side), and it's getting 9.0 packages for now. it'll
get to the 9.1 packages by tonight though, probably. and by tomorrow
i'll know if this is a viable way to mirror updates. i'll still go to
mandrakeusers though. there are some other things i want to mirror
like the plf RPM and maybe cooker.

i'll test rsync with other mirrors too, and settle on the nearest/fastest
one.

thanks again.
