I wonder what keywords you used to google for. I did several searches,
 and refined my search keywords to "cryptographic filesystem Linux".

One article just leaped out at me that should fairly address your
concerns. It's an article from Linux Journal. It discusses Matt
Blaze's Cryptographic Filesystem (CFS) for Linux.
