I think it is fair enough that a run-from-CD distribution not allow
installation, upgrading or removal of software. Users don't expect to be
able to treat the pressed CD or burned CD-R as a hard drive, do they?
This is part of why I think a Knoppix fork is relevant: the software
selection in the main Knoppix tree may not be suitable for everybody,
particularly to the target audience of Bayanihan. Revising it to more
aptly suit that audience can allow Bayanihan to build on Knoppix while
being unique enough to be relevant.

Then of course that's only considering Knoppix as a run-from-CD
distribution. Knoppix isn't just that, though. It can be used to install
Debian in a user's hard drive, as well. As a Debian-based
meta-distribution, Knoppix allows itself to be installed in a user's
hard drive, from which point it becomes pretty much a "standard" (but
not "old") Debian installation with the powers of apt-get, aptitude, and
all of that.

yet. I'm sure that can be a starting point for a "new Bayanihan",
though. Success in the installer area will probably even put the
Philippines "in the map" as far as Knoppix and Debian development are
concerned.

I'm glad you think it is. :)
