If I were new to Debian and ran headlong into dselect, I'd be tempted to give up, too. ;-> In fact, my own unpleasant experience with the installer and (especially) dselect is why I started keeping http://linuxmafia.com/debian/tips . (Newer material is towards the bottom. Don't expect a great deal of organisation.) I personally keep most of my machines on the testing branch and am quite happy with that. Occasionally I pull a package out of "unstable", as described in my tips document. People on the "testing" branch need to subscribe to Debian Security Advisories, and act on them manually as needed: http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/linux-info/debian-testing-security All of the branches other than "stable" get quite a lot of updated packages released on an ongoing basis. Be sure you're prepared to deal with the bandwidth demand. -- Cheers, The shortest distance between two puns is a straightline.
