Unfortunately, I think I've erased the True64 partitions on my AlphaServers so I can't compare Debian GNU/Linux with True64 any longer. I tried installing OpenBSD on the Alpha, but I think there was something wrong with the CD-ROM I got... I didn't really want to try NetBSD and FreeBSD won't run on an Alpha, so I ended up installing Debian GNU/Linux. Why not the other distributions? RedHat was no longer updating their Alpha port, and I am really comfy with Debian GNU/Linux already, so it wasn't a difficult choice for me. I still have to get some minor things to work, but on the whole it performs really well. > Debian GNU/Linux is quite good on Alphas, as its one of the few distros > that are still well maintained, as the other distributions mainly > concentrate on the i386 line. No. I lost interest when I ran into roadblocks with some extra libraries I needed, but maybe I should try it again when I've whittled down my really long to-do list. > Anyway, I'm already happy with Debian on my old AlphaServer 5/1200, as > it still blazes faster than Pentium IIs of a bit higher specs... just so > happened that some of my office "unproductivity" apps won't run on that > architecture :D Oh, speaking of "unproductivity" apps, I got VisualBoyAdvance to compile on the Alpha... it worked like a charm! :) What other office unproductivity apps have you been trying to get to work on the Alpha? -- ___ _____________________________ eric pareja (xenos AT maharlika.upm.edu.ph) \e/ [ Philippine Linux Users' Group ] Linux User #8159 http://counter.li.org v [Python Power!] [Debian Rocks!] [Ubiquitous Computing] /. #2834 Software Free the books!
