Or if using LILO, type the name of the kernel and "single" or "1" after it. Press "tab" for a list of kernels. This won't work if your terminal is listed as insecure, which is recommended. Setting that up is different for different distro's, so consult your documentation to find out how. Anyway, a Knoppix disc is often an easy way to break in to your system. To prevent people who aren't you from doing that, lock your BIOS with a password and prevent the CD from booting. For your own system, though, Knoppix makes a great recovery tool.
