They could also physically remove the drive, place it into another machine, etc. If you can't guarantee physical security of the machine, you have to look into encrypted filesystems. The worst part is that errors on the CD often cause IDE errors which effectively lock up the OS (as you've noticed). I already have some great Knoppix stories to tell, make it work and you will too.
