Hi, I just run a search on google, about accessing Wnidows Active Directory via LDAP, and got this link:
http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=110

It's not a technical article, but I think it describes a similar situation as you have. Instead of Linux server, it explains the problem of keeping multiple separate accounts on different systems NT systems -- uses Active Directory, Novell network -- uses it's own accounts system, and the cc:Mail system uses it's own system. And is explained that a unified protocol such as LDAP solves the multiple account problem, by having a centralized user database where all these systems can query from.

If you are using Exchange 2000, then I think you're in luck. I don't know much about the previous Exchange (5.5) if it stores the user's account/information in a windows active directory.

Whichever e-mail server you want to use on Linux, try to see if you can work with authenticating users via LDAP. Configure your Windows Active Directory to answer authentication queries from the e-mail server (Linux). I haven't tried it though, but thinking about it, it might just work. This way, all you have to migrate is the e-mails from the exchange mailboxes to the linux server. If you want to use similar feature as Exchange, such as storing e-mails from the exchange server, try the IMAP feature.

Note, I've tried using IMAP with shared folders folder, and it's way toooo slow. The way shared folders are handheld in linux is via symlinks, and symlinks are very slow to access, even if you just do a directory listing on it. :( There might be something wrong with my setup, but I advise you to try. :)

I hope this helps. :)

excuse me, correctmentation. I meant to Linux, let's say Mandrake 9.1,
which uses MD5 passwords of the form:

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
In practice, there is.
