And as for the modem, I am also trying to figure out how to get it
working in Linux. I have an external modem, but it has to be connected
to a serial port -- which weirdly, the Desknote does NOT have. I'm
currently using the other laptop as the gateway, which dials out and
does NAT for me -- both connected via a crossover ethernet cable.

Its also my problem with my ecs modem. it used to work with binary from
pctel.org which was compiled in 9cc version 2xx and i was using slack8.1
then. when i upgraded to slack 9/9.1 the modem doesnt work anymore
because it was compiled to ealire version of gcc.

probably hacking the modem driver source is the only solution left as
theres no latest binary has come out.

What model of ECS Desknote is this ? Diff models have diff winmodem chipsets (A530+ has ALi 5457, it's partly compatible w/ smlink's beta driver, but the codec is not compatible --- according to the driver.)

I managed to dial out properly but cannot connect. The ECS desknot A900 is said to have a winmodem with a SIS chipset....
