Will check that out now :) However, I'm quite satisfied with my setup
now (see below). :) That's even if I don't get the modem working. ;)

I got my SiS drivers from www.winishhofer.net for the XFree86 4.3
server. They work like a charm, and I get to use Xv for the video. 2D
acceleration is enabled by the drivers, but then you'd need the sisfb
support in your kernel. To be able to use the x drivers properly, i put
in these lines in my /etc/modules file (I'm using debian, and IIRC you
can put it also in /etc/modules.conf if /etc/modules does not exist for
your system):
sisfb mode=1024x768x24
OR if you have sisfb compiled into your kernel, you'd put this into
/etc/lilo.conf (I don't know how to do it in grub though):
image=/vmlinuz
...
append="video=sisfb:1024x768x24"
...
(Or something like that. I might be wrong, but you can see these tips
also at www.winishhofer.net)
You say you can use radeon for DRM? How is that possible? Would I be
able to use the on-board 3D support that it "claims" (according to the
ECS website) it has? How did you do it? share naman jan... ;)
> How do you control the built-in sound volume? (for music/vcd/etc playback)
I can't control the volume, but I can turn it on. If I use esd (esound),
then it can mix the audio before it gets sent to the DSP device.
I am still having problems with the sound though because the sound is
muted by default. I have to run an app (xine in particular) to get the
sound working. I can't diagnose the problem thoroughly though because I
have been busy lately. I should be able to pin it down sometime during
the weekend. :)
According though to some people on the net (I've gone to tuxmobil.org
and linuxlaptops.net) you can't control the volume via linux. They might
be wrong, I might be wrong, but unless I get others to get it to work, I
should accept that first because I can't get it working. :)

I haven't because I haven't any. :) but seriously, I think you'd have to
use something like hotplug and let it handle the USB stuff for you. I
don't know if there is a package in Slackware for hotplug, but debian
does it right for me when I do apt-get install hotplug. Another neat
tool for hardware detection and configuration is discover, which could
or could not be available for slack, but is definitely apt-gettable in
debian (apt-get install discover -- just sweet. ;) )

YES!! I first had this problem before, when I hadn't gotten the drivers
for the SiS video on the A530+ yet. But when I got them from the website
aforementioned, I use the xv driver in xine, and it works like a charm.
:) Now I can watch full screen video on this baby! :)

Then maybe i should get one of those. :) But as long as I have my setup
working here (the other laptop dials out to the world, and then i use it
as my gateway via a crossover cable using the internal LAN card...) I'd
delay my purchase rather for a USB flash card/thumb drive/<whatever
they're called> so that i could transfer files from one computer to the
other.

I think I didn't get that, but what I got rather was a DVD/CDRW COMBO
drive instead. :) lspci doesn't tell me about any WLAN devices in my
Desknote.
However, I do see 4 USB controllers... One Ali, and 3 VIA controllers.
Although I DO have 4 USB ports... You say it has built-in Prism 3 usb
WLAN? Hmmm... interesting... On the
(mental note, check that out...)
