Hmm, that could also be a good alternative, when we did try to force it, it work but with a price. Other command wouldn't respond well, just as u said.
However, the alias in postfix could be a solution. Thanks a lot DocMana. I did try to reason with them about this. Unfortunately, all calling cards that they have uses this format (name.surname), not to mention that all contact information that their clients have is using the above mentioned format. And, telling them the reason that its just technically hard in Linux would only makes them rethink migrating to Linux. Well you all know how management think.
For now, "name.surname" must work if I want linux as my mail server.

Most user programs will not accept "." in login names,
but I believe that a "." is not disallowed. You can write
cute programs (maybe in C) to force in the "."
However, you will get problems later on, for example,
when you do a chown of a file:
"chown pablo.reyes myfile"
because the chown command will think that the login name is
pablo and the group name is reyes. Maybe you could do
chown "pablo\.reyes":groupname myfile
but I have not tried that so I am not sure if it will work.
If those names with "." are needed only for ema il addresses,
I think it is easier to just use the /etc/mail/aliases file
where mail addresses with "." can be mapped to more acceptable
login names, like
pablo.reyes: pablo
My two cents worth.
