they all uses that chkname.c .

here are the programs under shadow tools:

1. chage
2. chfn
3. chpasswd
4. chsh
5. dpasswd
6. expiry
7. faillog
8. gpasswd
9. groupadd
10. groupdel
11. groupmod
12. groups
13. grpck
14. grpconv
15. grpunconv
16. id
17. lastlog
18. login
19. logoutd
20. mkpasswd
21. newgrp
22. newusers
23. passwd
24. pwck
25. pwconv
26. pwunconv
27. suauth
28. su
29. sulogin
30. useradd
31. userdel
32. usermod
33. vipw

with those 33 programs... only pwck, useradd and usermod used the chkname.c
program... therefore, chfn and other shadow programs are safe on this...

get the shadow-utils-4.0.3-6.src.rpm from the redhat site...

http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/9/en/os/i386/SRPMS/

by the way you can find good_name() function at
shadow-4.0.3-6/libmisc/chkname.c
