GNOME has gnome-volume-manager[3], which is a frontend to HAL, that automatically detects and automounts devices as they are plugged in your PC. You have to be use GNOME bleeding edge to take advantage of this. Hopefully it will be in GNOME 2.8, which is like 7 months from now.
