This is an inherent side-effect of the fact that your mail server stores
messages in the mbox format.  Let me guess, you're using that awful
UW-IMAP as your MDA behind SquirrelMail right?  We are using
Courier-IMAP with Maildirs and SquirrelMail is not slow on large
mailboxes (>200 messages, which you'll probably never see with Yahoo
given their quotas).
