I too don't like holy wars so much (but I like reading posts on it ;) I prefer trying several different apps/tools and get myself acquainted with each one; thus, given a situation, I can decide which is the right tool for the job. I love both the Un*x and GNU philosophies, but I don't really believe in strictly following one or the other: to do so contradicts the very idea of hacking, whose definition itself shows its hardy, naturalistic roots.
