I always have been a GNOME zealot.  :)
Way back since Red Hat 6.0.

And I would beg to differ about the "so scattered.. rough fonts." Red Hat 
9 or Fedora plus Ximian GNOME is, simply put, gorgeous. It even has 
subpixel antialiasing for those with LCD monitors (I don't). And it's not 
slow. I have an ancient, not-upgraded-since-2001 computer. It's plenty 
fast for me. And it boots faster than Win2k on the same machine.
