Have you tried looking at an actual SOAP message?  Text-based it may be,
but it's about as human-readable as the crud that MS Word's HTML
exporter produces.  And in that case, if a person can't easily parse it
visually, then what advantage does it give to offset the major
disadvantages like up to an order of magnitude more bandwidth
consumption?
