I use Asus motherboards almost exclusively here, running a7v's on two of
my main machines.

Asus doesn't make any of the chips or drivers, they just put it
together.  They rely on the original vendors for drivers.  The a7v's
have Broadcomm ethernet (and Broadcomm makes and supports a gpl'd driver
for it), and other components from Via, which are well supported by the
stock Linux kernel.

I'd imagine that rather than making the policy, they're simply echoing
what they're getting from the chip manufacturers.
