Well said. The money we save in pushing for a "volkswagen" linux-based pc could well be used for training. But training costs more. Longer turnaround time too.

Just imagine people learning linux then facing a world full of ms trash (.docs, vb, etc). I know there's a push for compatibility (ie: openoffice) but do you really think it's as easy as learning msword and dealing with msword files from the start?

More points to ponder: (defeatist I know :( )

1. The average human is not that curious about computer operations to warrant the use of an advanced system such as a linux.

2. The world is littered with ms trash already. The world is just now waking up that there are alternatives to windows... now that windows is fully inculcated deeply into every aspect of our work/social lives.

*** However, a point cited earlier about building a dumbed-down linux that will be strong against all the possible errors that a windows-spoiled user can throw at it is worth some points of merit...

siguro, if the "people's PC" was something like a Simputer (e.g. fixed hardware platform, na 100% linux compatible, bundled with linux) that would be seamless. i think you can make a "people's PC" for less than $200. Transmeta processor, SDR yung RAM.... ika nga, parang simputer talaga. pero walang gagawa nun dito. there's no initiative for such a

Why do I *love* reading this line :)

syempre ayaw nila nun kasi mababa presyo ( == lower absolute
value of scammed funds) plus, mas malaki talaga datung kung idadaan sa
usual supplier channels.

Definitely, in the long term, mas OK talaga to be free from M$. pero
in the short term... there are too many other problems that need to be
resolved first.

I agree. We are not sure that the money saved will go somewhere good. It wont even move our overall-quality-of-living up a micro-notch.

But the question still stands. If not now, when?

*Big Sigh*
