Well way back in 1972 or 74 (can't recall), DLSC had access to a
minicomputer through Stanford Microsystems (300 bps dial up). And when La
Salle finally got their own PDP 8i, UST had access to it by dialing to La
Salle over a 300 bps modem with an accoustic coupler.. Until then, a
PDP-11/34 was acquired through a donation around 76 to 78
time. Unfortunately, the operating system of the PDP 11 was RSTS/E,
although to the Unix oldies, they do know that Unix was first written
in a PDP 8 and later ported to PDP 11.

When I was in an England polytechnic 15 years ago, I was able to
'acquire' a 9 track tape of the BSD system 7 for PDP-11. Fortunately
I was able to load it on a PDP 11/24 (booting from tape takes forever)...
and for those fortunate enough to still see and use an original VT100
terminal, there is a smooth scrolling mode. The smooth scrolling mode
literally hides the speed of the computer -- an ls takes 1 second per
line!!!
