I just recently wrote such a program that interfaces to Gnokii recently,
since we needed to make a demonstration quickly but had a hard time
finding a proper GSM modem or the cables to connect a 7110 to a computer
that would work with Kannel, as those of you who went to my talk during
philosc would know... ;)  It's definitely doable, but the main problem
is it requires you to poll the phone at intervals to see whether there's
anything in the phone's memory for you to read.  Gnokii doesn't have a
facility to automatically notify you when a new message has arrived,
it's not part of the Gnokii API, and I don't think it's even possible
given the limitations of the serial interface some Nokia phones have.
Polling the phone runs the battery down fairly quickly, and after this
demo period is over we will probably need to replace the battery for
that poor phone...
