Can anyone help me witha wierd CD/RW/DVD problem?

I run Fedora Core 2 with the latest kernel on an Athlon XP 1700, 256MB
RAM, 2 HDD. It also has a a CDROM drive (hdd) and a DVD/CDRW Writer drive
(hdc). Both used to work, but that was when the CDROM was /dev/hdb and the
writer was /dev/hdd. I put both CD devices on the second IDE bus. Then all
of a sudden I had problems.

Basically, it takes about 90-120 seconds for the CD drives to mount. I get
errors like:

   DMA retry
   DMA timeout
(followed by a bunch of drive seek errors)

After about 2 minutes, the CD is mounted and I can usually continue as
normal. Once in a while, the drive gets sdtuck again and I get all sorts
of errors or a kernel panic.

Putting the drives back on the old cable setup doesn't make any
difference. I've tried changing the BIOS settings, switching master/slave
drives, adding "nodma" as a kernel parameter in grub, etc. Nothing works.

But, both drives work fine under Win XP. And you can boot from the drives
so the hardware seems to be good.

By the way, I did connect the IDE connectors backwards once (the cable had
no stud to keep them oriented). Will that damage the CD drives? I thought
about this, but since the drives work fine under Windows, that doesn't
seem to be the problem.

Help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys! God bless!
