While the list is still hot on the topic of hacking the kernel
(although mentioned in passing), anyone here already have experience
under his/her belt on the kernel proper? Specifically writing drivers
for it?

FWIW, I've already downloaded Linux Device Drivers, 3rd ed. (PDF), and
it is quite informative. However, nothing beats talking to someone
who's already been there and done that :D

I don't mind being reached off-list, BTW. :)
