Answering this with a (possibly stupid) question: do you allow MPlayer
to use RTC timing? Have you tried using softsleep or nanosleep timing?

I haven't been using MP for a longish time now, but I reckon I had the
same problem except that in my case it was a printer instead of a
MSD. Fixed it by my advice above (take a look at mplayer(1)), so I think
that's worth a shot...
