Check your fstab. It might have a "sync" mount option when the
necessary fstab entry is created when you plug-in your thumb drive. If
it has one has one, then that might explain why accessing your thumb
drive seems "slower".

As for mplayer, have you tried any other Xv capable programs like
xine? Do they also display that blue screen? What does "xvinfo"
command says?

And, BTW, x11 mode for playing video is really slow even if you have a
fast machine.
