I haven't been able to hack at the gnucash code yet, since I got the
sources at the office -- and no free time just yet to even read the
code.

Try checking the permissions -- maybe it has something to do with file
ownership or even rwx access.

That would be that fastest solution (which may still even not work) but
nonetheless, getting the latest version of the .deb for the gnucash
binary should be a good option to consider.

It does -- and it seems that the binary he ran gdb against didn't
contain debugging symbols so as to give a better analysis on what's
going wrong.

Let me try to build gnucash with debugging symbols and use gdb to find
out if there's anything I can dig up. :D (Of course, all in due time)
