Sigh. Didn't work. The option of an _internal_ floppy drive was in the boot selection tree, but disabled because there is no such drive. I removed it as an option but did not find a way to add an external USB flash drive. Perhaps Dell tech support will have an answer despite this no longer being a supported model and the last BIOS upgrade seven years ago.
