Is he certain that the problem is a failed hard drive? If there's no rush
bringing the laptop (or bare drive) to the next month's clinic will give the
hardware gurus something to work on.
And if he can not wait for the clinic I am more than willing
to give him some of my time to do an O(1) hardware evaluation
of the failure state.
