The reality is that the 'better system' already exists. You just have
to start using it for yourself. The thing about privacy individual
empowering solutions lack a marketing budget, so you DO have to either
search for them yourself or rely on word of mouth.

Security and privacy not being a first priority is a matter of the
culture and people on a project's development team. If a software
project's priorities are not well aligned with your goals you should
probably look elsewhere as even if said project is in a usable state
now, that may very well change in the future. If you can program
yourself or you are willing to fund development forking is also an
option.
