Are you going to share the solution? After all this, we'd like to know
what it was and what fixed it. This is, after all, a learning exercise for
all of us.

Michael,

Thought I had, but here it is:

1.) Slackware is multilib capable (perhaps others are, too). Thie means that
package such as gcc, glibc, and most of the others are can be compiled to
support both 64- and 32-bit applications on a 64-bit host. I installed the
multilib and compat32 packages here. The Dell C1760nw (for network/wireless)
driver is the Xerox Phaser 6000B, available as only .deb and .rpm packages
for 32-bit systems; no support for 64-bit systems.

Slackware has a rpm2tgz package that I used to repack the .rpm to the .tgz
format. Then I installed the driver.

2.) The C1760 user guide has step-by-step instructions on pages 41-42 for
setting the printer's IP address, netmask, and gateway using the arrow and
checkmark buttons (why a printer needs these I've no idea). After multiple
re-dos I got those properly set.

Having already defined the printer in CUPS (modifying the one used for the
failed HP C2550 color laser), I sent a test page to the printer and it
quickly came out.

Then I printed a GoogleEarth image of the project site. The file size is
176K but it took more than 5 minutes for the printer to digest the rendered
version sent by the desktop via lpd. But the output is excellent. My color
printing needs are infrequent and project related like this GE image so
printing speed is not a concern.

Regards,

Rich
