well if you installed Cantata from the repos then MPD is supposed to be
pulled in as a dependency. At least thats if I'm reading the dep list on
packages.ubuntu.org correctly.

So it it possible that other dependencies might be missing as well? there
could be a pulseaudio module or something that it needs to pull in, but
didn't. You might want to uninstall both Cantata and mpd, then 'apt-get
install cantata'. If it doesn't pull in mpd automatically then you might
have an issue with dependency resolution. Or maybe the packages are all
buggered up and you need to notify the maintainers ;-)

The fact that you had to install mpd yourself when it was supposed to be
automatic should be cause for concern all on it's own.
