There were two solutions that people found, but neither made any difference for me. But at least the page let me know that the error messages were coming from VLC. As for Silicon Dust's troubleshooting page, there was nothing useful. Their web site is frustrating because there is no search feature anywhere, and the logic of the site's organization escapes me. Tonight something totally unexpected has happened. I had been trying off and on all day with the desktop, but got nowhere. So, it now being time for the news, I switched to the laptop, only to discover that it was just as bad as the desktop. Is this thing now completely failing? After 15 minutes of getting nowhere, I went back to the desktop just for kicks, and guess what? It is working perfectly! WTH? My current theory is that somehow both channels of the device are locked to only one computer. During most of this saga they were locked to the laptop, and now they have become locked to the desktop. How that happened I have no idea. It's not how this thing is supposed to work. It has two channels precisely so you can connect two computers at the same time.
