Ohhh you are just getting started. Go DEEPER. All major operating systems now include a checkbox for "anonymous usage and metrics reporting". It records mouse/keyboard inputs, I/O logging data, and other HID related activities and reports it to a server to "help improve the quality of the service". This is literally biometric data.... This is the data you use to identify if someone is in the early stages of parkinsons. It's the data that can identify mild blindess in YOUR RIGHT EYE, BECAUSE ANYTHING ON THAT SIDE OF THE SCREEN IS ONLY VISIBLE IN ALL CAPS. It's doesn't need to have PIM attached, it just has to be consistently gathered along with millions of other devices. And the thing I thought most interesting was the vendor neutral tone of the video. Yes, we know Google is doing it. But so is Microsoft, Apple, Mozilla, and KDE. You've seen those buttons, right? If all of these companies are supposed to be competing, why is that same feature always there? The wording is always identical, as if it's all implemented through the same 3rd party service. In order to make this type of data analysis work, it's possible that there is a single data center, or cluster of data centers dedicated to the task, and all of these supposedly competing vendors are part of the same infrastructure. A single company whose flagship product is habit-based ad campaigns. And like any other tech product, there is a raw material that must be mined and/or purchased as part of the manufacturing process. Now I'm itching to buy a Purism device just to see if they have the same little checkbox. I would literally bet someone $50 that Purism is collecting HID metrics while adhering to their commitment of privacy and security. I've seen these features popping up on popular linux desktops, so it goes wayyyy beyond the walled gardens of Apple and MS. _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
