Monday I used Chrome to participate in a ringcentral meeting, using the
Yamaha headset. When I try the same browser and headset with jitsi it tells
me that it "Failed to access your microphone. Cannot use microphone for
unknown reason."

pavucontrol configuration is:
Logitech webcam C925e Profile: off
HDA ATA HDMI Profile: off
HD-Audio Generic Profile: Analog Stereo Duplex

Input devices:
HD-Audio Generic Analog Stereo Port: Front Microphone (plugged in)

Output devices:
HD-Audio Generic Analog Stereo Port: Headphones (plugged in)

Have I mis-configured pavucontrol? How do I allow Chrome to access the
microphones?

The other thing I'd be interested in is whether his audio jack even
supports a microphone. There is some diversity in whether the microphone
jack is integrated with the headphone (4 contacts on the plug) or with a
separate jack. So, does the microphone work in the jack using some other
application? If not, that'd be his problem right there.

Let me clarify. The cord on the Yamaha head set splits toward the end. One
line terminates in a black jack for the headphones (which is plugged into
the green-rimed socket/port on the front of the case. This plug has three
sections separated by red rings around the plug.

The other line terminates in a grey jack for the microphone which plugs into
the red-rimmed socket/port on the front of the case. This plug has three
sections separated by black plastic rings.

The read of the motherboard also has red and green jacks, as have other
motherboards I've used. The green ones are for output and the red ones for
input as far as I know.

For more information, please ask.

Is jitsi working sans audio? Can you do a screenshare or anything like that? I'd like to see what your pavucontrol settings look like with my own eyes and doublecheck alsamixer. I've run into all kinds of mic related problems and I've yet to run into one that I cannot fix via pavucontrol and alsamixer. My work day officially ends at 5pm. At 5:30 I can have jitsi installed we can walk through the pulse settings for obscure configuration issues.

Full disclosure: I have 10 years of experience troubleshooting Mac, Windows and Linux desktops. 5 of those years were spent supporting Ubuntu end-users on refurbished laptops and desktops. I can say with complete and total confidence that Ubuntu is a garbage OS and does not present any significant benefits.

So if ANYONE on this list would like to suggest that Ubuntu is a well supported OS I would love nothing more than to dump years of solid customer support issues from 8.04, 10.04, and 12.04 on your sad sorry ass. We can lay down some facts on Jitsi or whatever stupid electron app you think is the best thing since sliced wonderbread.

There's a fucking reason Free Geek switched to Xubuntu in 2012. I'm sick of seeing this pro-buntu propaganda. It's bullshit, and it's ALWAYS been bullshit. If I wanted lies and misinformation then I'd go watch a White House press briefing.
