I had that problem with a previous printer.  But with this latest the
manual states that with the power turned off the printer loses information
about the printing history so it cleans the printheads every time it is
turned on. So I never power it off.  With power on but in standby it uses
very little energy and the ink does not get drained.  (This is for an
HP4630.)
